Shipping Mobile Phones from UAE: Regulations and Requirements
Understand IATA regulations, HS codes, and destination requirements before shipping mobile phones internationally from UAE.
Shipping mobile phones internationally requires special attention because they contain lithium-ion batteries, which are classified as dangerous goods under IATA (International Air Transport Association) regulations. Phones shipped by air must comply with IATA Packing Instructions PI 966, 967, or 968 depending on whether the batteries are inside devices, packed separately, or loose.
The correct HS code for smartphones is 8517.12 in most countries including UAE and major trading partners. Using the wrong HS code can result in customs holds, incorrect duty assessment, or confiscation. Your freight forwarder should verify the HS code and applicable import duties at the destination before shipping.
Egypt requires IMEI registration for imported phones and may require a type approval certificate from NTRA (National Telecommunications Regulatory Authority). Saudi Arabia requires CITC (Communications Authority) type approval for commercial imports. Other African markets may require proof of conformity or import permits. Elite Cargo coordinates all destination requirements through its local partner network.
For personal shipments of 1–2 phones, express courier is the fastest and simplest method. For commercial B2B volumes of 50–1000+ devices, air freight via Dubai International Airport or sea freight via Jebel Ali is recommended. Declare all devices accurately on the customs invoice to avoid issues at both UAE export and destination import.
